When you have a teething baby, you can’t help but notice the little ones around you wearing those cute little rubber or plastic necklaces to ease the pain. If you’re like me and don’t want your baby wearing the same thing as every other baby on the playground, why not make your teething necklace? It could be more accessible. In just five easy steps, you can have your chain that will be unique to your child and original. Here’s how you can do it.
1) Choose your materials
To make your unique necklace, you need some materials. If you don’t want a hassle, you can order the best teething necklace from Mama Jewels at a very reasonable price. To make it yourself, you need the following materials.
Beads: Choose beads that are nontoxic, unbreakable, and colorful. Try using a variety of colors and textures, such as smooth and bumpy beads or metal and plastic beads. If you have any old jewelry you’re no longer wearing, use those too!
String: Pick a series that is long enough for your necklace and strong enough for the weight of the beads. Polyester embroidery thread or nylon fishing lines are good choices because they won’t break easily under pressure.
Clasp: Use any clip you like, but be sure it’s large enough to secure your beads, so they don’t slip off when the baby pulls on them.
Pliers (optional): The easiest way to attach a clasp is with pliers, but there are other ways if you prefer not to use pliers.
2) Cut the cord
- Cut the cord to the size you’d like your necklace to be. Use scissors, a utility knife, or wire cutters.
- Thread one end of the cord through the other, creating an X pattern by crossing the ends over each other. Knot securely and trim any excess threads.
- Add a teething ring by threading it onto one side of the X from top to bottom, then knotting it tightly at the bottom.
3) String the beads
Cut the necklace cord to the desired length, tie a knot and one bead, then cut off the excess thread. Continue adding beads until you have reached your desired size or number. Tie a knot again, add another bead, and cut off the extra cord.
4) Knot the end
First, take an 18-inch long ribbon or cord and tie a knot about 1/4 inch from one end. Take the other end and back up the loop but wait to pull it tight.
Then tie a second knot on top of the first one, pulling it tight, so you have a loop sticking out on either side of your original knot.
5) Add a clasp
- Get a length of ribbon and fold it in half lengthwise.
- With the folded side facing you, make a double knot about three inches from one end of the ribbon.
- Thread both ends through the clasp and pull them out on opposite sides so that they are both facing out from each other at the same time.
Your teething necklace is ready to use.
